Who is God the Son?

I have taken it upon myself by the grace of God to answer some of the questions many people ask about Jesus. Many people wonder what it truly means for Jesus to be God the Son. I pray that after reading this short article you will come to an understanding of the true nature of the second person of the Godhead.

The Trinity?

To understand the meaning of what it means that Jesus is God the Son, you first need to comprehend what the trinity is. It is true that the theological word, "Trinity" is nowhere mentioned in the Bible, but the concept of the Trinity is ubiquitous in the scriptures.

The Bible teaches that there is one God: "Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! (Deuteronomy 6; 3). So God is one in essence and nature, but eternally exists as three distinct persons namely father, Son and the Holy Spirit. The Bible says: After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased" (Matthew 3:16-17) .

One important truth you need to understand is that there are different roles that the members play within the economy of the trinity. The Father initiates salvation (John 3; 16) the Son provides redemption through the sacrifice of himself (Romans 3; 24) and the Holy Spirit regenerates the lost soul (Titus 3; 5).

With this foundation, let us dive a little deeper into the identity of God the Son.

Who is God the Son?

God the Son is the second person of the trinity, also known as Jesus Christ. He existed as God prior to the creation of the world (John 17; 5). He created all things (John 1; 3), he also enjoyed divine privileges and prerogatives as God in the bosom of the Father. But God the Son saw from eternity past a need, he saw us sinking deep in sin and per the consensus between them, he undertook the onus to be our saviour. Paul wrote by the Spirit saying: "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2; 5-7).

God the Son though fully God, yet for our sake he humbled himself and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of Men. He dwelt among us, and was not half God and half man as some teachers teaches, he was one hundred percent Man and one hundred percent God at the same time, he was and still is theanthropos.

The apostle continued: "Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Philippians 2: 9).

Jesus humbled himself even further by submitting to such a cruel death, death by crucifixion. But God demonstrated his righteousness in the death and literal resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ. The cross allows God to be both just and the justifier of the ungodly who exercises faith in Jesus (Romans 3; 26).

Jesus did not remain in the grave when he died, he resurrected and is currently seated at the right hand of the father as a reward for his obedience. The author of the epistle of Hebrews beautifully writes it this way: When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high (Hebrews 1; 3). Apostle Paul also communicates the same truth in these words: Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us (Romans 8; 34). The apostle assures us by the Spirit that because Jesus rose again and is at the father's right hand we can rest in the security of our salvation, because he is interceding for us. His session at the right hand of God is not for his benefit, but for our own benefit.

So who is God the Son? Jesus Christ is. God bless you

A thought to ponder 🤔

His session at the right hand of God is for our own benefit
