What can we learn from Jesus calming the storm?

Beloved in Christ, the life and ministry of our blessed Lord as recorded in the gospels, are written down for our learning. The story of Jesus calming the storm can be found in the synoptic gospels, namely Matthew, Mark and Luke, see (Matthew 8; 18-27, Mark 4; 35-41, Luke 8; 22-25). Jesus calming the boisterous wind was an amazing and momentous miracle which is worth our attention.

Let us look at the passage itself: Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they launched out. But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger. They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm. And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?" (Luke 8; 22-25).

There are theological truths as well as moral lessons we can learn from this event, which I believe will be a great blessing to us.

One important theological truth we can learn from this story is the truth about the humanity of Christ. The author wrote; " But as they were sailing along He fell asleep". Contrary to the opinions of those who reject the human nature of Christ, we can see that Jesus was truly human. At a point in his life, after spending much time in teaching and healing the sick, he was exhausted and extremely tired that he fell asleep. Gnostics are a group which utterly deny the humanity of Christ, by saying that he only appeared to be human, but in reality he was not. The bible does not support such an absurd teaching. It is clearly stated in the book of Hebrews: Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil (Hebrews 2; 14). According to the author, Jesus Christ took on flesh and was truly a human being just like us. He slept like any other person and was unaware of what was going on, until he was awakened by his disciples.

An important lesson, we can learn from this event is that, when the wind became boisterous the disciples came to Jesus Christ and none else. The passage reads, "They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing". When the storm raged the disciples thought it wise to come to Jesus and there was peace. When the wind becomes boisterous in any aspect of our lives, it will be to our own advantage to call on the name of the Lord and we shall be saved. Jesus is our present help in time of need. Probably your soul is cast down, and you do not know what to do, in the midst of the storm, I beseech you to come to Jesus in prayer, for he is the only person who can help you

Another important lesson we can learn from this story is that, Jesus was there with the disciples, even in the midst of the roaring wind and surging waves. Jesus never left them to perish, he was there with them. Even so beloved, in the midst of your trials and unpleasant situation, the Man Jesus Christ is still there with you and will surely come through for you, for it written: ''Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41; 10). Let your heart always be fixed on Jesus and you will experience his manifested presence in every situation.

Another theological truth, we can learn from this momentous event is the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ. The author penned down these words: He said to them, "Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?" Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. The men were amazed, and said, "What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" (Matthew 8: 26-27). Jesus Christ exercised the power of his Godhead in calming the sea. He defied the natural laws of nature by the word of his power. The disciples were amazed that even the winds and sea hearkens to him. Jesus calming the raging sea by his powerful word proves his deity.

The last thing we can learn from this event is that, as Jesus Christ calmed the sea, so he has the power to cause peace to be still in our problems, and in every unpleasant predicament. He will carry us through and glorify himself at the end. Jesus has commanded peace to be still in the lives of countless believers in their health, finances, marriages, relationships etc. What really matters is that we should continue to trust him, because he has the power to rebuke the storms of life for our good. God bless you
