Is salvation by works or faith plus works or faith alone?

This is an important question which must be answered biblically, and every other extra-biblical teaching must be rejected. There is a lot of confusion and uncertainty even among certain brethren, whether salvation can be obtained by amalgam of faith and works. The above question was the primary cause for the protestant reformation. The Roman Catholic Church taught and still teaches that salvation can be received by faith in Christ, and adhering to certain rituals before a person can be saved. Their view concerning salvation is in antithesis to what the bible really teaches about salvation, and that led to the protestant reformation. Their unbiblical teaching led to a major theological revolution around the world. Reformers like Martin Luther who is considered as the father of the protestant reformation, John Calvin, Zwingli, and more came out from the Roman Catholic Church. To answer such a question, it is incumbent on us to delve deeper into the scriptures to see what the bible really...

Salvation in Christianity

Salvation is an overarching theme in the bible. It is a core tenet of our faith. Without salvation, then there is no such thing as biblical Christianity. What is salvation? Salvation is a spiritual deliverance from sin and it's consequences which includes eternal separation from God. God in his wisdom revealed in part his plan of saving the sinful world to the patriarchs like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David by the One whom he has chosen.  Also, the sacrificial system under the law were prophetic symbols which pointed to the salvation that will be brought about by the anticipated One, Jesus Christ. The prophets also prophesied that there was One coming who will provide salvation to his people through the sacrifice of himself. God's word is trustworthy, whatever he said in the bible concerning salvation by Jesus Christ he has fulfilled it. Jesus Christ death and subsequent resurrection accomplished not a transient, but an eternal salvation for us.  But the question is, what ...

Substitutionary Atonement

Substitutionary atonement in the christian faith refers to Jesus Christ laying down his life as a substitute for sinners. The death of Christ on the cross was substitutionary, which means that he died in the place of the ungodly. The substitutionary death of Christ was foreshadowed in the sacrificial system under the old covenant. When a person transgresses against God's law, he offers a lamb without blemish to be used as a sacrifice to atone for his sins. Instead of the transgressor to die, the innocent lamb dies as his substitute, the sacrifice was vicarious in nature (Leviticus 4). The blood of the animal sacrifices were impossible to permanently expiate the sins of the people. The sacrificial system was a type which pointed to the spotless Lamb of God to come, who would offer the perfect sacrifice, by which the sins of his people will be permanently forgiven (John 1; 29).  The bible reveals the entire human race as sinners (Romans 3; 23) and the punishment we deserve for our si...

The doctrine of Redemption

Redemption is an important truth in biblical christianity which carries deep theological significance. The doctrine of redemption is at the very heart of the gospel. The dictionary defines redemption as the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment. Redemption in biblical christianity is the ransom price Jesus paid at the cost of his life to purchase us from the domineering power of sin, and it's eternal consequences. I love how Ligon Duncan, an excellent theologian defined it, "Redemption (apolutrosis) refers supremely to the work of Christ on our behalf, whereby he purchases us, he ransoms us, at the price of his own life, securing our deliverance from the bondage and condemnation of sin".  Redemption applies to those in prison, to those in bondage, for such people needs a redeemer to redeem them and secure their deliverance. Of a truth, the entire human race have fallen and plunged deep in sin. Through the disobedience of the one Ma...

Is Jesus the only way of salvation?

Many people are of the view that there are many ways to be saved. They believe that there are quite a number of ways by which a person can be saved eternally. Such asseveration is fallacious and in direct contradiction to what the bible really teaches. Christian's from all over around the world have been insisting on the uniqueness of Christ as the only way of salvation. The bible does not present two saviors, but presents only one savior who is the savior of all those who trust in him without discrimination, and his name is Jesus Christ. The way of salvation is narrow and only a few finds it. Those who reject the accredited savior are on the broad road, which is a pathway of destruction, but those who have trusted in Christ alone for salvation are on the narrow road, a pathway way that leads to life and wholeness. Salvation can be found in none else, save in the person of Jesus Christ. All other supposed means of salvation does not hold water, because Jesus Christ is the only way ...

Jesus Christ, our Sabbath Rest

I thank God for this opportunity which he has afforded me this day to elaborate on this important subject matter. The biblical term, "Sabbath" simply means "to cease from labor or to rest from work". The idea of sabbath can be traced to God after he completed the work of creation. God used six days to finish the work of creation and he rested on the seventh day: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made (Genesis 2:1-3).  It is essential to understand that God rested not because he was extremely tired, he is the all powerful God, but he rested in the sense that he ceased from work, because there was no more work to be done. He rested from all his labor, because he has finished creating what...
