What does it mean that Jesus is our Mediator?

Beloved, to better understand and appreciate the role of Jesus Christ as a our Mediator, it is imperative on our part to know, why we need a Mediator? Who are we in a dispute with, that necessitates the mediatorial role of Jesus Christ? The bible tells us: For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1Timothy 2: 5). The question is who is a Mediator? A Mediator is a go-between opposing parties with the sole purpose of reconciling them together. A Mediator does not create disputes, but rather settles disputes. Under the law, the high Priest alone was legally mandated to enter within the veil with the blood of a lamb without blemish into the holy of holies, where the divine shekinah of God dwells and he makes atonement for the sins of the entire people of Israel (Leviticus 16). The sacrifices for sin by the high Priest was done year by year on the day of atonement for the sins of the Children of Israel: but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance (Hebrews 9: 7). The high Priest acts as a Mediator between the children of Israel and God. Because the children of Israel transgressed against God, the high Priest performs his sacerdotal duties by acting as an intermediary between them and God, he stands as their representative to make reconciliation for their sins. The high Priest represented the children of Israel before God, and offers a sacrifice to propitiate God on the day of atonement, and God accepts his sacrifice and forgives their sins. The role of a Mediator is very crucial in resolving conflicts, and establishing peace between parties.

We also sinned against God through Adam. When Adam sinned against God, sin and it's dire consequences entered into the world, for it is written: Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned (Romans 5:12) We became sinners by nature, for we inherited the sin nature of Adam. Therefore, we sin because we are sinners by nature. David in his penitential Psalm pen down these words: Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me (Psalms 51: 5). We sinned against God through the disobedience of Adam and by our own sins. We all stood guilty before God on account of sin, as it is written: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3: 23). The only punishment for sin is not just a physical or spiritual death, but an eternal death as well, that is eternal separation from the presence of God forever ( Romans 3; 23). No amount of so called good works could satisfy the justice of God against sin, nor render God propitious towards us. In fact the bible says: For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away (Isaiah 64:6). So, all our religious acts in an attempt to be accepted of God were null and void, because right standing with God is not on the basis of good works.

There was no hope for us, no hope of being reconciled to our maker, because we have been alienated from him by virtue of our sins. Sin must be punished, the law of God must be fulfilled, and the justice of God must be satisfied. Therefore, there was a need for a Mediator, One who can mediate and reconcile us back into relationship with God. For this cause, the eternal Son of God emptied himself not of his divine nature, but of his glory and privileges as God and took on the likeness of sinful flesh. Jesus Christ was both God and Man at the same time, and that qualified him to be the perfect middleman or intermediary between us and God. "The salvation of men necessitated that the Mediator should himself possess the nature and attributes of him towards whom he acts, and should likewise participate in the nature of those for whom he acts (sin apart); only by being possessed both of deity and humanity could he comprehend the claims of the one and needs of the other; further, the claims and the needs could be met only by One who, himself being proved sinless, would offer himself an expiratory sacrifice on behalf of men; one who acts as a guarantee so as to secure something which otherwise would not be obtained" (Vines dictionary). The incarnated deity in the person of Jesus Christ was the perfect mediator who reconciled us to God through the sacrifice of himself. His sinless life and his once and for all time substitutionary sacrifice atoned for our sins, fulfilled the law and satisfied the justice of God against us for our sins. For through Jesus Christ our Mediator, we are not only reconciled with God, but we have eternal peace with God (Romans 5; 1).

The author of Hebrews wrote: But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises (Hebrews 8; 6). Jesus Christ, the mediator of the new covenant has ratified, and secured all the blessings encapsulated in the new covenant for us. Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and Men, see (1Timothy 2; 5). Dead saints including the virgin Mary and the holy angels are unfit, they unqualified to serve as mediators between us and God. It is highly preposterous on the part of those who claim that dead saints and angels are intermediaries between God and us. Such absurd insinuations is not in coherence with the holy writ. Their false hypothesis must be refuted and condemned, for there is only one Mediator between God and Men, the Man Jesus Christ and none else. We who have placed our faith in Jesus Christ for salvation are in a good standing with God, because of the mediatorial role of our Mediator. We stand before God freely justified and acquitted of all wrongdoing because of the death and resurrection of our glorious Mediator (Romans 8; 34). Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and Men, and he is the only way of salvation, for eternal salvation cannot be found in anyone else, save in the person of our Mediator. Peradventure, if you are not having any relationship with Jesus Christ, then you need to trust in him to be saved. He alone can wipe away all your sins and give you a fresh start, a new life of peace, love, hope and joy. Call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ now and thou shalt be saved (Romans 10; 13). God bless you
